Pre-implantation diagnostics (PID) allows genetic testing of a developing embryo even before it is implanted in the uterus. PID therefore always requires artificial insemination as part of fertility treatment. In PID, cells are taken at a very early stage of development for genetic testing.
In order for PID to be possible, the predisposition to a specific monogenic disease or a specific chromosomal abnormality must have been precisely determined by preliminary tests in the family.
In Germany, there are precise legal regulations on preimplantation diagnostics. PID can only be performed in special PID centers with a special license. PID centers consist of a human genetics center and a fertility center. Before each PID, an ethics committee of the medical association must approve the diagnosis and treatment.
Each individual couple must submit an individual application to the relevant ethics committee for PID (with the support of the PID center, after review of the genetic findings).
